Below is a simple guide on how to dose CBD gummies and edibles.
How Does CBD Work?
Before we get stuck into the specifics of dosing CBD gummies and edibles, it helps to have a basic understanding of how CBD acts in the body.
You’re likely familiar with the huge variety of CBD products on the market.
And while they all might seem unique, CBD products basically work in 1 of 4 different ways:
- CBD gummies, edibles, and capsules need to be broken down by your digestive system before they take effect. Once they’ve been digested, the CBD is absorbed via the lining of your digestive tract where it enters the bloodstream.
- CBD oils can be taken sublingually. Here, the CBD is absorbed via the mucous membrane under the tongue and transported around the body via your bloodstream. When swallowed, CBD oils also need to be broken down by the digestive system in order to take effect.
- CBD topicals like creams and lotions don’t deliver CBD to the blood. They just target localized receptors in the part of the skin where they are applied. Some transdermal CBD products, however, are capable of delivering CBD to the bloodstream.
- Some CBD products (like special oils or even CBD-rich cannabis flowers) can be smoked or vaporized. Here, the compound enters your bloodstream directly via the capillaries. Smoking/vaping CBD tends to offer the fastest relief.
For the purpose of this article, I’m just going to focus on CBD gummies, although I also recommend you check out other CBD products like oils and creams, as they are super versatile.
Once your body has digested a gummy and the CBD has reached your bloodstream, it starts to activate the endocannabinoid system.
This system was first discovered in 1990 by Israeli researchers led by Dr Raphael Mechoulam at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Mechoulam and his team were basically trying to understand how cannabis delivered its unique “high.”
Through their research, they discovered a receptor that’s now known as cannabinoid receptor 1, or CB1.
Another cannabinoid receptor, CB2, was discovered in 1993.
CB1 receptors normally receive anandamide, a cannabinoid that affects the central or peripheral nervous system and plays an important role in pain management, mood, eating patterns, and more.
THC, the main psychoactive chemical in cannabis, is very similar to anandamide and can bind to CB1 receptors.
When it does, it creates those iconic effects that characterize a cannabis high.
CBD is a little different: Unlike THC and other cannabinoids, it doesn’t bind to either cannabinoid receptors.
Instead, it seems to work on non-cannabinoid receptors and specific ion channels that subsequently end up stimulating the endocannabinoid system.
In doing so, CBD can produce a variety of different effects, including:
- Pain relief
- Anti-anxiety effects
- Stress relief
- Metabolic effects
- Appetite stimulation
- Immune effects

What Constitutes an Average Dose of CBD?
Cannabinoids are tricky to dose.
That’s because the right dose depends on a variety of factors, including:
- The condition or symptom you’re trying to treat.
- Your personal body chemistry.
- The chemical profile of the CBD product you’re using.
- The route of administration.
With so many variables affecting your unique experience with CBD, it’s really hard to establish a basic standard dose for CBD and other cannabinoids.
How to Find Your Perfect Dose of CBD
Some people may find they get effective relief from their symptoms with only a few milligrams of CBD, while others might need much more to get the effects their looking for.
Hence, your goal with CBD dosing should be to find a dose that alleviates your symptoms without causing side effects.
Here’s the best way to that:
- Start with a single daily dose of 5mg of CBD. Try this for 1-2 days and see how you feel.
- If you don’t get any side effects, step up your dose to 2 daily doses of 5mg CBD. Make sure you space these out evenly and take your first dose in the morning and the second in the evening.
- Keep this up for at least 3-4 weeks so your body has time to adjust to the CBD. Also, pay attention to how your body reacts to the supplement.
- Increase your daily dose by another 5mg if need be. Wait for at least 3 weeks before stepping up your dose again.
Remember, the goal here is to find what works for you.
If you get relief from a single 5mg dose of CBD, that’s great.
If not, don’t worry:
You can always up your dose, just do so in a controlled and patient manner as I outlined above.
CBD tends to have more sedative-like effects in higher doses.
In smaller doses, however, CBD can actually be energizing.
How to Dose CBD Gummies:
You might have noticed that CBD edibles usually contain more than just 5mg of CBD.
Gummies, for example, tend to contain at least 25mg CBD per gummy.
That’s because the release of CBD from edibles tends to be a lot slower than the release from sublingual tinctures, transdermal patches, or smoked/vaped CBD oils/flowers.
Hence, you’ll often find that you need higher doses of CBD when using edibles like gummies.
Luckily, most reputable CBD companies spend a lot of time developing the best and safest ways to dose their products.
With most CBD gummies, I recommend starting with half a gummy per day just to gauge your reaction.
Then, step it up to 1 gummy per day, and stick to that dose for at least 3 weeks before stepping things up.
Remember, these are just rough guidelines. Always follow the dosage instructions that came with the product you bought.
A Note on the Side Effects of CBD
While CBD is a very safe and non-toxic supplement, it can produce some minor side effects, including:
- Diarrhea and stomach upsets
- Appetite changes
Most people experience these side effects when they take large doses of CBD too quickly.
That’s why its so important to always start with smaller doses and work your way up slowly.
