If you’re reading this, chances are you’re interested in taking CBD.
Maybe you’re looking for relief from a specific symptom/condition, or maybe you’re just thinking of using it as a daily supplement to boost your overall health.
Now, there are countless CBD products out there.
However, you may have heard about CBD gummies and their unique benefits over other types of CBD products.
In this article, I’ll look at CBD gummies, how they work in the body, and their pros and cons compared to other forms of CBD.
CBD Gummies are Edibles
Edible CBD products, you guessed it, are designed to be ingested.
They work by delivering CBD into your bloodstream via the gastrointestinal tract.
That means that once you swallow a CBD gummy, it needs to be digested before it’ll start taking effect.
This can take roughly 1-2 hours, depending on your digestive system, metabolism, and whether you have any other food in your system.
As they’re being broken down by your gut, the CBD from the edibles is absorbed into your body where it can be delivered to receptors all throughout your system.
CBD Gummies Can Activate the Endocannabinoid System in Your Digestive Tract
The endocannabinoid system is a type of signaling system made up of specific receptors cells (namely cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2) and endocannabinoids.
Our body produces 2 kinds of endocannabinoids; anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, which bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors.
These receptors are spread all throughout the body.
Research has found CB receptors in the brain, skin, and even inside immune cells.
CB2 receptors, in particular, are found in considerable amounts throughout the GI tract, where they seem to play an important role in immunomodulation.
Taking CBD can activate the endocannabinoid system in the GI tract and in turn help regulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, and much more.
Now, it’s important to note that CBD can’t bind directly to cannabinoid receptors like THC or other cannabinoids.
Instead, CBD activates the endocannabinoid system in a more indirect fashion, activating over 60 different molecular pathways all throughout your body.
If you suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and inflammation, gummies and other edibles can be a great way to deliver CBD directly to the area and calm these symptoms.
CBD Gummies Can Relieve Other Symptoms, Too
Just because CBD gummies are broken down in your GI tract doesn’t mean they can’t relieve symptoms in other parts of your body.
CBD, whether taken in the form of edibles, a sublingual oil or vaped through a vaporizer, can relieve a wide variety of symptoms.
Once it enters the bloodstream, CBD can interact with receptors all around the body.
Hence, the CBD from a gummy can be delivered anywhere it’s needed, and can therefore help relieve a plethora of different symptoms.
You’re probably reading this wondering how a single gummy can have so many different symptoms.
This really doesn’t come down to the gummy, but the system that processes it.
The endocannabinoid system plays a central role in regulating a wide variety of bodily processes.
In fact, scientists believe that the endocannabinoid system helps promote homeostasis, a state of equilibrium that keeps our bodies working at their best.
For example, the endocannabinoid system has been shown to help regulate immune function, body temperature, metabolism, inflammation, and more.
It can also help regulate the production of important neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and GABA.
Hence, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that CBD gummies can only treat symptoms throughout the GI tract because that’s where they are broken down.
Many people use CBD gummies for things like pain, anxiety, and a myriad of other symptoms, including those I mentioned above.
CBD Gummies Offer Long-Lasting Effects
Gummies and other CBD edibles produce noticeably different effects when compared to other CBD supplements.
I personally find that the effects from CBD gummies seem to last longer than those from oils.
If I take a CBD oil sublingually in the morning, for example, I seem to feel the effects kick in within 15-25 minutes.
The effects then seem to subside and plateau over the next couple of hours.
Gummies, on the other hand, are much more subtle and I usually don’t notice their effects until maybe 1-1.5 hours after taking them.
However, the effects of a single gummy taken in the morning can last all day.
In some sense, the effects of gummies seem to have a slower release than those of an oil.
This makes them really popular among people who need long-lasting relief from a specific symptom all throughout the day or night.
My wife, Sara, for example, uses a variety of CBD products for anxiety and skin issues.
Sara works a really stressful job that causes her a lot of stress and worry.
If she’s facing a particularly important day at work during which she needs to stay focused and motivated, Sara will often take 1 or 2 gummies throughout the day to help her stay calm and collected.
While I don’t suffer from anxiety the same way Sara does, I definitely also have my days when I’m nervous and stressed.
As an amateur triathlete, I tend to get pretty nervous and anxious in the days leading up to an event.
Game-day is obviously also a pretty stressful time for me.
Like Sara, I also find CBD gummies really effective at providing long-lasting relief from these symptoms, allowing me to stay focused on my performance instead of nervously mulling over things in my head.
Many other CBD users also use CBD gummies for long-lasting relief from pain and inflammation, as well as sleep problems and headaches.
When to Choose CBD Gummies Over Other CBD Products
CBD is a very unique supplement in that it affects everyone differently.
Hence, it’s always a good idea to try a variety of different CBD products in isolation and find what works best for you.
In general, I advise people to take gummies for mild-to-moderate symptoms of pain, anxiety, stress, mood problems, and sleep difficulties.
For things like pain and anxiety, consider taking a gummy first thing in the morning for long-lasting relief during the day.
Let a few hours go past to gauge your reaction, then, if you feel your symptoms come back later, take another gummy as needed.
For sleep problems, I recommend taking a gummy roughly 2 hours before bed.
For more severe symptoms, I usually recommend using CBD oils as they contain higher doses of CBD.
Now, remember that CBD gummies need to pass through your digestive system before they can take effect.
If you need fast relief from your symptoms (within 10-20 minutes), I don’t recommend taking gummies unless on an empty stomach.
I also don’t recommend gummies for any kind of localized pain or inflammation, like sore joints or inflamed skin.
For these kinds of symptoms, I recommend looking to topical CBD products like creams instead.
Tips for Taking CBD Gummies
If you’re trying CBD gummies for the first time, here are some simple tips to help you get the best relief:
- When starting out, take just 1 gummy at a time and give yourself at least 1.5 hours to gauge its effects.
- Let the gummy dissolve under your tongue for a few minutes. Some of the CBD will be absorbed via the mucous membranes under your tongue, helping it to work faster.
- If you’ve never tried CBD before, start by taking your gummies in the evening. Some people find CBD makes them sleepy, which can be a nuisance during the day or early in the morning.
- Remember that gummies will take a longer time to take effect when taken on a full stomach.
- Always read the packaging of the particular brand of gummies you bought and calculate your dosage accordingly.
- In general, I prefer gummies made with full-spectrum hemp extract over those made with CBD isolate because they contain other beneficial compounds from the hemp plant. This is, however, just a personal preference.
Finally, always make sure to research your options when trying any type of CBD product.
